John Koehler Gerhart (1907-1981) was born in Saginaw, Michigan, and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1928 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy. After graduating from Advanced Flying School at Kelly Field, Texas, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve.
